Scene One Entertainment to operate New Canaan Playhouse
Historic two-screen theater to come under Scene One operation by mid-March; first Scene One-branded theater in Connecticut
NEW CANAAN, CONN. (Feb. 11, 2026) — Scene One Entertainment has announced it has acquired the lease for the New Canaan Playhouse, located on Elm Street in downtown New Canaan.
“We are honored to take stewardship of the New Canaan Playhouse,” said Joe Masher, owner and CEO, Scene One Entertainment. “Our goal is to preserve the character and legacy of this iconic theater while enhancing the experience for audiences through thoughtful programming and presentation, with a focus on partnership activation of The Pub and second-floor speakeasy spaces.”

The New Canaan Playhouse has been a beloved gem for the residents and visitors of New Canaan for more than a century, with its history harkening back to opening with “Down to the Sea in Ships,” featuring Margurite Courtot and Clara Bow. For many years, it remained a single screen until 1986 when it was split into two screens. In recent years, the Town of New Canaan made a historic investment of $8.5 million into renovating the Playhouse to allow it to be enjoyed for many generations to come.
Scene One plans to continue the Playhouse’s tradition as a destination for quality film programming while exploring opportunities to expand its role as a vibrant hub for cinema, special events, and community engagement. Additionally, the company is finalizing its partnership with The Pub’s current operator, Z Hospitality Group.

Scene One Entertainment brings extensive experience in commercial, independent and specialty cinema exhibition, with a focus on curated film selections, filmmaker events, repertory programming, and community partnerships. The company looks forward to working closely with local organizations, patrons, and the Town of New Canaan as it begins this new venture.
Scene One expects to assume operation of The Playhouse in mid-March. Inaugural programming and upcoming events will be announced in the coming weeks.
